What is hormonal skin?

Hormonal skin is a skin issue that develops in response to hormonal changes, especially in the rise of androgens such as testosterone.

How do hormones affect the skin?

Some symptoms of hormonal skin are:

  • Dry skin
  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Acne
  • Rosacea

During puberty or pregnancy when hormonal changes take place, hormonal acne is especially apparent. Stress can also be a factor as it increases cortisol which leads to increased sebum production, inflammation and acne breakouts.

Acne

Hormones control oil gland activity, so hormonal fluctuations may lead to acne. Salicylic acid or Gluconolacctone can gently clear up blemishes without over-stripping the protective barrier.

Brown Spots

Hormones also control melanin production. Ingredients like kojic acid, azelaic acid, retinoids, vitamin C and laser therapy can lighten and help clear up hyper-pigmentation.

Dryness

Low estrogen levels or a thyroid hormone imbalance can reduce production of the skin’s natural oil. Using emollients and increasing omega-3’s in your diet can help replenish skin lipids.

Dehydration

Hormonal imbalances such as elevated stress hormones can cause dehydrated skin. Humectants such as hyaluronic acid and urea bind moisture to the skin. Lactic acid hydrates and exfoliates the skin.

Inflammation

Inflammation can be caused by elevated levels of cortisol or reduced estrogen levels for a long time. Foods such as ginger, turmeric, probiotics and oats can help to reduce inflammation.
