We all know how to wash our hands, right? Rinse it under cleaning running water. Done. Right?

Wrong!

Did you know that only 19% of people surveyed, wash their hands after going to the toilet? Imagine the amount of faecal matter on their hands.

Many people do wash their hands. With water. But very few use soap, let alone, wash thoroughly.

So, how do you wash your hands thoroughly?

According to the CDC:

  1. Wet your hands with clean running water. Turn off the tap and apply a sufficient amount of soap.
  2. Lather the soap between your hands. Spread this lather to the back of your hands, in between your fingers and your wrists.
  3. Scrub your hands lightly using your fingernail bed for 20 seconds. Don’t know how long that is? Sing ‘Happy Birthday,’ start to finish, twice. Easy.
  4. Rinse well under clean running water.
  5. Dry your hands with a clean towel or air dry them.

What if you have no clean water?

While washing your hands thoroughly with water and soap is the best way to keep your hands clean, there may be some instances where you might not have access to either.
