Many students think that college or university is pretty much like high school, or more relaxed than high school. But the truth is, there are some vast differences. A lot of students that did not do well during high school excel in college whereas some can’t get used to college life thus do not do as well as they did in high school. Some high school graduates are overly optimistic and confident in their ability to manage challenges they will face during college, then they’re disenchanted when they did not met new college’s academic, social and personal expectations. You should know the differences lie ahead to prepare yourself before stepping into another stage of study life.

You will probably be 18 years old by the time you enter college, all your lecturers or professors will treat you as an adult. You should self discipline, and make sure you do what you are supposed to do. You will be responsible for your life and you need to meet greater expectations. In college or university, there will be fewer rules and regulations. You should keep up with your work by making your own schedule and most importantly, stick to it. You should attend all the lectures, although many professors do not bother taking attendance. They expect you to be there to learn and you yourself are responsible of your own learning.

Lectures will be organized differently from high school classes. There will be big lecture classes and tutorials sessions. Some professors will have you read journals, write papers and discussion in class. Professors don’t check homework, they will assume that you’ve been doing the assignments and following the syllabus. Take studying seriously because in college, exams or written assignments comprise a huge part of your grade. Go to the library so that you can focus and avoid distractions.

There will be assignments pilling up while you’re juggling with quizzes, tutorials, reports, and exams. Eventually, you will be stressed out with the due dates and finals towards the end of semester. Take it easy and always plan your timetable, you should be able to survive your university life. Colleges or universities will most probably be your second home. You will eat and sleep there, spend time off there and make new friends there. Eventually it will be a memorable time in your life like no other.
