Coconut Oil: Not Just For Cooking

Coconut oil is a common ingredient used in health and beauty products. In beauty produucts, coconut oil is used for its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Especially before you bed, coconut oil is good as a treatment as it has time to really soak in. Here are some ways you can include coconut oil in your beauty routine.

1. Dry Hair

Gently heat a little coconut oil till it is lukewarm, then rub the warm oil into your scalp and hair. Wear a shower cap and leave overnight. Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner as usual the next morning. Do this once a week for dry hair.

2. Dandruff

Coconut oil is thought to prevent bacteria and fungi from forming dandruff and causing itchy scalp. It has also moisturising properties which helps with dandruff caused by dry skin.

Mix coconut oil with a few drops of tea tree oil and heat till lukewarm. Massage into your scalp and hair for 5 – 10 minutes. Wear a shower cap. Do this every time you shampoo your hair or have dandruff. If your dandruff seems to be caused by dryness skip the tea tree oil.

3. Hair Loss

Coconut oil is thought to strengthen hair follicles and help with hair loss.

Heat a small cup of coconut oil until lukewarm oil. Massage this into the scalp. Wear a shower cap and leave overnight. Shampoo your hair as normal the next morning.

4. Dry Skin

Coconut is very moisturising which leaves your skin soft and healthy.

Just rub 4-5 drops of coconut oil / 1/2 teaspoon if it’s solid and apply onto dry and clean skin. Massage until completely absorbed then leave overnight.

5. Cracked Heels

Apply lukewarm coconut oil to your feet and massage for a few minutes. Wear socks and leave overnight. For severe cracks, solid coconut oil is better.
