First, where did this word come from?
In the early 20th century, the United Fruit Company in the United States of America coined it to describe their bananas. The popularity of this term was further boosted by physicians publishing their findings of the banana diet to treat conditions such as celiac disease and diabetes. This was before the discovery of gluten. Needless to say, the term ‘superfood’ caught up quick and has stuck around since.
Fast forward to now, the term ‘superfood’ can be seen in almost every health and food blog in some form or other. Unsurprisingly, this term is now used as a major keyword to drive sales and affirm consumer’s pre-existing notions of an already healthy food.
But everything in moderation, right?
Now, what makes superfoods special?
One particular compound all of them have varying, but high levels, is antioxidants.
I’m sure you’ve heard of ‘antioxidants’ before, but what are they?
They are naturally occurring molecules that neutralize free radicals in the body. Free radicals being the natural by-products of energy production.
Why are too many free radicals bad?
Free radicals are associated with degenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s, deterioration of the eye lens and arthritis. They also contribute to the aging process and certain cancers.
Back to superfoods, many have high levels of an antioxidant called polyphenols. For example, the Queen of Fruits, mangosteen, has 40 different types.
Other food high in antioxidants include berries such as acai, blueberries and goji.
Soy, tea and leafy greens are also high in antioxidants.
How can this be used in products?
Superfood can be used to boost functionality and bring value to your brand. Food such as mangosteen, berry powder, goji powder, acai and fibre are all good potential additions to your functional food product.
