Psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease that causes red, scaly patches to appear on the skin. This means that it is a disease characterised by inflammation caused by dysfunction of the immune system. Why the immune system does this however is unclear. Scientists do however, know that the immune system and genetics play a major role in its onset. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Treatment Psoriasis is usually based on steroids but must be used with caution as will create high dependence and skin thinning resulting in long term damage to the skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the MayoClinic<\/a>, the overactive immune system produces skin cells at a faster pace that normal. Usually normal skin skills mature and fall off within a month. However, the skin cells in those who suffer from psoriasis can complete this cycle in three or four days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of falling off, the skin cells accumulate on the skin surface. The plaques may also be itchy, burning or sting. While the plaques may appear on any part of the body, they are most commonly found on the elbows, knees and scalp. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inflammation caused by psoriasis can also affect internal organs and tissues. A health condition associated with psoriasis are psoriatic arthritis. It is important this condition is caught early to prevent permanent joint damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Symptoms often start between ages 15 and 25, but can start at any age.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
